In response to the social injustices highlighted across the nation in 2020, the Northern Nevada Women Lawyers Association created a scholarship with the University of Nevada, Reno to promote equality and reduce the gender gap in the legal profession. The Northern Nevada Women Lawyers Association is a voluntary membership organization committed to its mission of the advancement of women in the legal profession, the promotion and improvement of the administration of justice and the encouragement of a spirit of friendship and trust among its members. NNWLA endeavors to combat racism and the systemic abuse of the justice system. Since 1978, women have entered all facets of the Nevada legal and political community, aided by the numerous women who guided NNWLA’s members through the years to overcome the societal obstacles put before them on their path to success. Unfortunately, there is still work to be done, since, as of 2020, the State Bar of Nevada reported that only 35% of Washoe County attorneys are women. According to those who participated in the State Bar of Nevada 2020 demographic survey, approximately 13% of attorneys who responded identified as a member of a minority demographic group. NNWLA strives to reduce the economic barriers preventing aspiring lawyers from attending law school. Through the establishment of this scholarship this January, NNWLA will support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree at the University who intend to attend law school after receiving their degree.
Thank you in advance for your contribution! Your contributions will be recognized on this page as well as the University's.
