Members are invited to attend Judge Youchah's Formal Investiture Ceremony held on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 4:00pm, at the Lloyd D. George United States Courthouse, Carol Fitzgerald Jury Assembly Hall, 333 Las Vegas Blvd. South, Las Vegas, NV 89101. Congratulations Again! Member Spotlight:"My Cause" By Jenna Garcia During my senior year at Reed High School I had the amazing opportunity to participate in a program called “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution.” We the People is a class students can take instead of traditional government, but it is also a National Competition. The students in the class are organized into six units who then prepare answers to questions that they then will ultimately present to a panel of judges during simulated congressional hearings. Those judges will then engage in a cross examination of the students about the paper and any other issues they wish to address. The first competition is the District competition where all the schools in the same Congressional Districts within their State’s compete. The top schools then move on the State Competition and the top two schools from State go on to the National Competition in Washington D.C.. The program has grown immensely from the time I competed and now even has elementary school and middle school curriculum. The goal of the program is to promote “civic competence and responsibility” but that does not even begin to describe the impact it has on the students. The students who compete in We the People not only understand our history and our government, but they are asked to consider and analyze our current problems and issues. They learn to speak well and to voice their opinions. They learn what societal and political issues are important to them. They emerge from the class as educated citizens ready to make an impact. I believe that civic engagement and education is vital and so this program is near and dear to my heart. Currently I am serving as one of the coordinators for the Second Congressional District’s Competition, but previously I acted as a volunteer coach for the Wooster High School’s program. Aside from the amazing teachers who take on this momentous task, the program really benefits from and relies on members of the community who are willing to coach the students, act as judges at rehearsals, or ultimately act as judges at the District, State and National Competitions. We are always for looking for professionals willing to volunteer their time to assist these students. I can attest that most people involved find it a rewarding and encouraging experience. NNWLA would like to congratulate the Reno High School We the People team for their win this past weekend, and good luck at Nationals! *** Do you have a cause that you're passionate about?
