NNWLA Aces Baseball Game
Please join us for a family friendly event on July 19th watching the Reno Aces baseball team play the Tacoma Rainiers.  We had so much fun at this event last year, we decided to do this event again.   The game begins at 7:05 p.m. on July 19th.  Watch the game with us in luxury in the Bugsy Sports Bar/Overlook area, complete with great views and padded seats.   Enjoy the game with your family and friends in the best seats in the house!

​Summer Garden Party Celebrating 40 Years of Leading Lady Lawyers
On August 16, 2018 at 5:30 p.m., we will host a garden party honoring the NNWLA Past Presidents  at the home of the Honorable Lynne Simons.  This will be an elegant evening that you will not want to miss!  Light refreshments will be provided.  Please RSVP by emailing [email protected] by August 9, 2018. 

If you are a NNWLA Past President, please keep an eye out for an invitation to the event with an earlier RSVP deadline of July 13, 2018.  We will be doing something special for our Past Presidents at the event, which will require a little more advance notice.

NNWLA and the WCBA are co-hosting a lunch time discussion with Judge Kathleen Draklulich on September 12th at noon at the Harrah’s Convention Center.  The price is $25 for a NNWLA or WCBA member and $30 for non-members.  1 hour CLE credit pending approval.  RSVP by September 10th at www.wcbar.org or by calling (775) 786-4494.

Sustaining Member Spotlight 
Amy Tirre, a UC Davis alumna, passed the Nevada bar in 1997 and began her legal career by serving as a law clerk for the first ever female Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court, Miriam Shearing. Early on, Amy was also fortunate to practice law with a fabulous female mentor, Jann Chubb. After exploring several areas of the law, Amy found her passion in bankruptcy law. Amy describes practicing bankruptcy law as “let’s make a deal,” which she prefers to “the winner takes all” mindset in civil litigation.
 
Since Amy found her niche in bankruptcy law, she has successfully run her own private practice since May 2008, making this year her 10th anniversary. Amy describes the opening of her solo practice as the best and scariest decision of her life.  Nevertheless, Amy has been routinely recognized as a “Super Lawyer” since 2010 for her representation of creditors in state, federal or bankruptcy court in the mountain states.
 
Amy is a sustaining member of the Northern Nevada Women Lawyer’s Association (NNWLA). Not only is Amy a longstanding member, she also served as president of NNWLA in 2002. Amy began her presidency of NNWLA in a peculiar position because she had to recruit an entirely new board of directors.  It all turned out because one of the new board members became a lifelong friend. Amy believes that one of the most important benefits of NNWLA is the opportunity to network and create lasting friendships with other women lawyers.  She also enjoys participating in a NNWLA Mentor Circle with Jann Chubb, Judge Simons, Marilee Cate, Sara Almo, Jenna Garcia, Holly Estes and other dynamic and wonderful NNWLA members. 
 
NNWLA has provided mentorship and guidance to Amy as well. Through her mentors and role models, Amy received advice that supported her success along her career path and she wishes to pass it along:​
      your reputation is everything. Do not jeopardize your reputation for a client. . . Think of every              letter and email as Exhibit A. Do not put anything into writing that you would not want read by a         judge. . .If you are ever wondering who your most important client is, the answer is always the          client you are talking to right now. 
​
Although Amy has dedicated herself to her legal career, she recognizes that there is more to life outside of law. Amy recently married her amazing husband, Peter Cornelius.  Amy recently completed a professional coaching certification.  She has started a coaching practice to empower women to successfully navigate personal and professional transitions.  She teaches webinars, including Empowering Women and Midlife Mavens: Turning Madness into Magic.  She will be co-leading a CLE with Margaret Crowley, “Stress Relief through Movement and the Senses” sponsored by the WCBA this summer.  Please contact Amy if you have an interest in coaching and your professional development as a woman in the law: [email protected].

Gender Bias Study Reveals Distinction in Perception of Male and Female Attorneys
Arizona State University recently conducted a study on gender bias regarding the perception of attorneys.  In the study, men and women attorneys conducted identical closing arguments. The study found a dramatic distinction between men and women when they anger in the courtroom.  Male and female test viewers "found the angry male attorneys to be commanding, powerful, competent and hirable. They found angry female attorneys to be shrill, hysterical, grating and ineffective."
