March 16th - Luncheon at noon at SoDo
In honor of Women's History month, NNWLA is hosting a CLE luncheon on March 16th at noon at SoDo.  The theme for Women's History Month this year is "Honoring Trailblazing Women in Labor and Business."  Keeping the National theme in mind, NNWLA invited Molly Rezac, a local employment and labor attorney, to do a CLE presentation for us in March.  Molly will be discussing recent intriguing case law on non-competes and negotiating employment contracts.  We hope you can join us on March 16th at noon at SoDo for what is sure to be an interesting and informative presentation.  Please go to our events page to RSVP for this great event!  CLE approval pending.

This month, we are trying out a new menu buffet and new pricing options.  SoDo will serve a tasty buffet which will include: a house salad; braised beef; fajita wraps; vegetable orzo pasta; tomato soup; and, a brownie for desert.  Additionally, NNWLA would like to encourage our members to bring non-members to our events.  We are now offering a member price option, a non-member price option, and a discounted option for a member bringing a guest to the event.

Trailblazing Women in the Law
Women's History Month and the International Women's History Month, celebrated worldwide on March 8th, exist to honor the inspirational women who influenced society and paved the way for a brighter future for women.  In a blog written by Kelly Buchanan entitled Women in History: Lawyers and Judges, Ms. Buchanan highlights the first women lawyers and judges in various countries. Below is an excerpt from her blog regarding the United States:

​Arabella Mansfield was the first woman admitted to the bar in 1869 in Iowa. She had not studied at a law school but rather had studied in her brother’s office for two years before taking the bar examination. Curiously enough, in the same year Ada H. Kepley became the first woman in the United States to graduate from law school. A year later, in 1870, Esther Morris was appointed as a justice of the peace in Wyoming Territory – the first woman in the United States appointed to a judicial position. Genevieve Cline was the first woman appointed to a federal court in 1928 when President Coolidge nominated her for a seat on the U.S. Customs Court. She remained on the court for 25 years. Florence Allen, who had previously been a justice on the Ohio Supreme Court, was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit in 1932, making her the first woman to be appointed as a judge to a federal appeals court. . . .

This blog provides a fascinating comparison of the first women in various countries to become a lawyer or a judicial officer.  It is interesting to note that the United States is one of the first countries mentioned to have a woman admitted to the bar, and less than a year later appointed its first woman judicial officer.

​Volunteers needed for NNWLA Lawyer in the Library Event on April 19th at 5:30 pm
NNWLA is looking forward to working with the Washoe County Law library at hosting a large Lawyer in the Library event on April 19th from 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.  In order to make this event a success, we will be seeking volunteer attorneys to participate in the event.  Volunteer attorneys will provide assistance to community members with their legal questions.  More details concerning the event and an optional training session will follow.  We hope you will join us (and encourage others to join us) for this worthwhile cause!  You do not need to be a member of NNWLA to volunteer.  If you would like to volunteer for the event, please email [email protected]

​May 12th at 6:35 p.m. - Take Me Out to the Ball Game! 
Kick off Mother's Day weekend with NNWLA at a Reno Aces Baseball game with the whole family!    Cheer on the Aces as they play the New Orleans Baby Cakes.  Watch the game with us in luxury in the Bugsy Sports Bar/Overlook area, complete with great views and padded seats.  Not only will you get to enjoy the game with your family, but your ticket includes a free Aces baseball hat to help remember this great event!  To RSVP, please go to our events page.

​International Women's Day Events at UNR
In celebration of International Women's Day, the University of Nevada, Reno is hosting a month long celebration!  The events include a conversation with the extremely successful successful sports broadcaster Danyelle Musselman, a walk around the quad, mindfulness training, a panel discussion on equality issues featuring women leader panel members, a showing of the Oscar nominated film Hidden Figures, a Women's Summit with local Nevada women in prominent leadership positions, and much more.  The 2017 International Women’s Day theme is "Be Bold For Change."  Please check out their website for a full calendar of events!

​Consumer Fraud Prevention Fair - March 8th
On March 8, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Consumer Affairs Unit of the Nevada Department of Business & Industry is holding a Consumer Fraud Prevention Fair in Carson City at which multiple resource booths will be present, as well as a panel of speakers from local and state entities geared toward consumer protection.  This includes providing resources regarding consumer rights, how to avoid becoming a victim of fraud, and assistance to help resolve fraud or deceptive business practice complaints.  Admission is free and open to all members of the public.  The fair will be located at The Studio at Adams Hub, 177 W. Proctor Street, Carson City.

​Investiture for Nevada Supreme Court Justice Lidia S. Stiglich
The investiture for Nevada Supreme Court Justice Lidia S. Stiglich will take place at 3 p.m. on March 9th in the Nevada State Library and Archives Building in Carson City.  The investiture, which was initially scheduled to occur in January, was rescheduled due to severe weather.  Prior to being nominated to the Nevada Supreme Court, Justice Stiglich served as the Department 8 District Court Judge for the Second Judicial District Court.  To learn more about Justice Stliglich, please read our April 2016 Newsletter.
