Please Join NNWLA in Thanking Our June Event Speakers Thank you to everyone who attended our June Luncheon at Silver Peak discussing legislative issues. We had an impressive turnout for this informative luncheon. We are grateful that Assemblywoman Amber Joiner (District 24), Senator Heidi Gansert (District 15), and Assemblywoman Jill Tolles (District 25) were able to join us to provide us with their thoughts on the most recent legislative session. We hope the speakers answered some of your questions. We would also like to thank Patricia D. Cafferata, Esq. for moderating this event. Spotlight on Laura May Tilden: The First Woman Admitted to the Nevada State Bar In 1893, the Nevada Legislature enacted legislation that allowed women to practice law in Nevada for the first time. Nevadans credit Laura May Tilden for the passage of this important legislation. On July 23, 1893, at the age of twenty-two, Laura was the first woman to pass the Nevada Bar Exam. Laura was born in Sacramento, California on April 24, 1872. Her parents were Marcellus Crane Tilden and Elizabeth J. Ralston. In 1880, Laura's family moved to Virginia City, Nevada where her father started a legal practice. Since there are no records that Laura attended law school, historians assume that she studied law by reading the legal books in her father's law office. Laura moved to Colorado a few years after passing the Nevada Bar. Although she was the first woman to pass the Nevada Bar, there is no evidence that she practiced law in Nevada.
