Mix and Mingle with the Judiciary Please join us on Monday, October 22, 2018, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., for a Mix and Mingle CLE event with some of our local distinguished female judges at the UNR Innevation Center, located at 450 Sinclair Street. This will not be your typical panel type discussion. We are mixing it up and doing this as a speed dating type of event where attendees will be able to discuss practice tips with each judge in small groups before moving onto the next table and next judge. Have your questions answered by Justice Lidia Stiglich, Judge Dixie Grossman, Judge Lynne Simons, Judge Miranda M. Du, and Commissioner Robin Wright! We may have some additional judges joining us, so make sure to check for updates on our website as the event approaches! This event is a unique opportunity to have your questions answered and meet with our judges in an intimate setting. 1 hour credit CLE pending approval. The cost is $20 for members, $30 for non-members, and $40 for a member and one guest. Please RSVP using the PayPal link on our Events Page by Wednesday, October 17th. Annual NNWLA Holiday Events Please join us on December 13th for our annual Holiday party at Judge Simons’ wonderful home. Directions will be provided upon RSVP to [email protected]. Please RSVP by Monday, December 10th. On Saturday. December 15th, we will hold our annual shopping event for the students of Veterans Memorial Elementary School at the J.C. Penney store in the Meadowood Mall. The event is a wonderful opportunity to provide underprivileged children attending Veterans Memorial Elementary School with warm clothes and presents for the holidays. Each $100.00 we raise allows us to shop for another child. As a thank you to everyone who donates, we will publish a list of our volunteers and donors in the January NNWLA blog. The donors will be acknowledged in the following categories: Gold ($200 and above); Silver ($100- $199); and Bronze ($1- $99). Any amount, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated and will ensure that more children can participate! Donations can be made through our website at nnwla.com/events or by sending a check to Jenna Garcia, P.O. Box 40953, Reno, NV 89504. We also hope you will consider joining us that morning as a volunteer shopper. Our volunteers are paired with a Veterans Memorial Elementary student and help the child pick out their purchases. Most volunteer shoppers are finished in about one hour. Please email us at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer. Thank you Judge Drakulich and the Washoe County Bar Association We had a wonderful event last month at our August event with the Washoe County Bar Association. Thank you to Judge Drakulich for speaking at this sold out event! We all enjoyed learning more about Judge Drakulich's path to the bench and recent trends at the Second Judicial District Court. The Atlantic Article: What It Takes To Be A Trial Lawyer If You're Not A Man - by Kendra G. Bertschy Last moth, The Atlantic posted a very intriguing article by Laura Bazelon regarding female trial attorneys. Ms. Bazelon is a professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law. In her article, she discusses her experiences witnessing "stubborn cultural biases female attorneys must navigate to simply do their jobs." She describes different ways that she has seen sexism in the courtroom setting, including through motion practice. The article includes experiences from other female lawyers that she has interview over several years throughout the nation. In closing, Ms. Bazelon provided readers with the advice she provides to her female students to prepare them for practice. "So I tell my female students the truth: that their body and demeanor will be under relentless scrutiny from every corner of the courtroom. That they will have to pay close attention to what they wear and how they speak and move. That they will have to find a way to metabolize these realities, because adhering to biased expectations and letting slights roll off their back may be the most effective way to advance the interests of their clients in courtrooms that so faithfully reflect the sexism of our society."
